Non-”tiki” exotica music
Exotica just didn’t come out of nowhere. Here is a sampling of what I consider to be tiki non-tiki music:
- Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe Suite (particularly the second one).
- Ravel’s Tombeau et Couperin.
- Early arrangements featuring Gabby Pahinui - such as the tunes “Ahulili” and “Hame Pila”
- Big band arrangements with latin influences (i.e. Juan Tizol’s stuff)
On the more modern side, there’s also J.Lo’s “I’m Real,” which actually uses a sample of Martin Denny’s “Firecrackers,” and a pre-release version of Mariah Carey’s song “Loverboy,” which according to Wikipedia also wanted to use the Denny “Firecrackers” sample but didnt. (Read more here, under the sub-heading “Sampling Controversy”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loverboy_(song).
